As parents, one of the greatest joys is watching our children grow—not just physically, but spiritually as well. If your child has been asking about baptism, you might be wondering, “How do I know if they’re ready?” At RiverGlen, we believe baptism is a personal decision that should be made when a child understands the commitment they are making to follow Jesus.
Baptism Is a Personal Decision
Throughout the Bible, we see baptism as a public declaration of faith in Jesus. It’s not something we do for our children, but something they choose when they are ready to express their own belief in Jesus. Acts 2:38 says, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” Baptism follows repentance and faith—both of which require understanding.
Understanding the Commitment
So, how do you know if your child is ready? Here are a few key questions to consider:
Do they understand who Jesus is and what He has done for them?
Have they made a personal decision to follow Jesus?
Can they explain why they want to be baptized in their own words?
At RiverGlen, we encourage parents to have these conversations with their kids, helping them explore their faith in an age-appropriate way.
There’s No Rush—It’s About Readiness
Every child’s faith journey is different. Some may be ready to be baptized at a younger age, while others may take more time. That’s okay! What matters most is that their decision is their own, not something they feel pressured to do.
If your child is asking about baptism, we’d love to walk alongside your family in this process. We offer resources and conversations to help kids understand what baptism means and why it’s important. Our Level Up class is perfect for kids ages 1st-5th grade, who are curious about baptism, communion, and more.
